When it comes to bringing about important changes in society, I strongly believe that each of us possesses the power and ability to raise awareness and push for such changes.
This can be achieved by us believing in our individual power and making our opinions heard through various forms of media.
Throughout most of 2023, I’ve consistently written articles each week on various issues and sent them to the mainstream news media in my country to be published.
These are issues and topics that I feel strongly about and that I want the government to seriously tackle and solve.
But in our current political system, our politicians generally don’t prioritize the actual well-being of the average citizens, and so they aren’t particularly committed to solving certain important issues with the required urgency.
The Fear Of Negative Public Perception
However, one of the things that our politicians are concerned about to a certain extent, is the perception of the public towards them.
They want the public to have a generally positive view of them and that they’re seen as a government that cares for and helps the people.
This is because only a generally positive public perception will enable them to acquire enough votes and achieve or remain in power during the elections.
A Level Of Expectation Is Placed On The Government
When such issues are put out in public via the news media, it indirectly places a spotlight and a certain level of pressure on the government and the politicians.
Some of them will feel a bit pressured to take some sort of action toward addressing and solving those issues.
This is because they want to maintain their appearances and image towards the public, by showing that they do indeed care and are committed towards solving society’s issues.

Because, any inaction on their part, would eventually result in negative perceptions by the public towards them, thus lowering their share of the voters’ support.
Raising Much-Needed Public Awareness
When my articles are published in multiple news media outlets, they are out in public for everyone to read, including the politicians.
By having my articles published in this manner, it directly highlights the issues that I feel passionate about and that I want the government to take more seriously.
And so, this is another huge benefit as a significantly large number of people will get exposed to and become aware of the various issues that I write about.
An Effective Way To Initiate Change
Some people also may have a change in their previously-held perspectives and opinions towards those particular issues.

All this can lead to more people taking into account these new perspectives and opinions on such issues, whenever they decide to vote in the next elections.
Even better, some people may feel motivated and determined enough to take action and apply pressure on the government, either by themselves or by joining a particular group or NGO, in order to solve some of those issues.
Taking Into Account The Hard Reality Of The Situation
All that being said, I am realistic, in that I know that the effects of my writings as well as whatever pressure being applied by my published articles and opinion pieces towards the general population and especially the politicians, is relatively small.
This unfortunately is the reality, given that as I mentioned, our politicians don’t really prioritize issues that affect the general public.
This, plus the fact that the general public themselves have been ‘programmed’ by the education system and the government so as to not be particularly critical and discerning in their thinking and opinions.
People in general are also not exposed to the importance of mass mobilization in order to put significant public pressure on the government in the form of demonstrations, rallies, public campaigns, etc.
Nevertheless, It’s An Important Part Of A Larger Process
However, the way I see it, my actions are a part of the larger, long-term process of applying pressure toward the ruling class and bringing about actual change, in order to truly uplift and solve society’s problems. And if I can do it, then so can you!
And also, as with most things in life, it’s always worthwhile, and indeed better, to actually take some form of action towards addressing whatever issues that we feel strongly about, instead of only complaining about them and letting them ruminate in our minds.
We need to start believing in our power as individuals and strive to make our opinions heard. Just imagine if a significant amount of us started consistently articulating our strong opinions towards our broken political system! Think of the amount of sustained pressure we could create towards our politicians.
At some point, they’d be forced to seriously listen to us and take our concerns into consideration. Make no mistake, each of us possesses the power and ability to bring about important changes in society!
